The Hank Harmon Shooting Range, a staple for local shooters since 1960, has reopened after a significant upgrade. The improvements, funded by the ADF&G Pittman-Robertson Hunter Access Grant, bring modern safety and accessibility features to the range. These upgrades ensure a better experience for everyone, from beginners to seasoned marksmen.

Upgrades That Improve Safety and Comfort

One of the most important changes is the replacement of the old wooden barrier walls with a new earth berm between the two ranges. This change enhances safety by providing a more reliable and durable barrier. The range also features new custom concrete shooting stations, offering shooters a stable and comfortable place to practice.

The shooting shelters have been upgraded with new roofing and gutter systems. These improvements protect shooters from the elements, making the range usable in a wider range of weather conditions. The expanded parking area now includes curbs, gutters, drainage infrastructure, and fresh asphalt paving, making access easier and safer for visitors.

Clear Lines of Sight and Better Range Layout

The target berms have been realigned to provide clear lines of sight, which is crucial for safe and effective shooting. The range surfaces have been regraded to improve drainage, preventing water buildup that could affect shooting conditions and safety.

Downrange access roads have also been improved, allowing for smoother movement around the range. New safety signage has been installed throughout the facility to guide visitors and maintain a safe environment. These signs clearly mark range boundaries and provide important safety reminders.

Accessibility for All Shooters

The upgrades include designated ADA-accessible parking and access features. This ensures that shooters with disabilities can enjoy the range comfortably and safely. The City and Borough of Juneau worked closely with the Hank Harmon Public Range Board, proHNS LLC, North 57 Land Surveying, and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game to complete these improvements.

What Shooters Can Expect

Visitors to the Hank Harmon Shooting Range will notice the fresh look and improved functionality immediately. The new concrete shooting stations provide a solid foundation for shooting, while the upgraded shelters offer protection from rain and sun. The earth berms and realigned target berms create a safer shooting environment with better visibility.

The expanded parking area reduces congestion and improves traffic flow, making it easier to arrive and leave the range. Safety signage throughout the facility helps maintain order and prevent accidents. Shooters with mobility challenges will appreciate the ADA-accessible features, which make the range more inclusive.

Supporting Local Hunting and Shooting Communities

The improvements at Hank Harmon Shooting Range support local hunters and shooting enthusiasts by providing a safe, well-maintained place to practice and improve their skills. The funding from the ADF&G Pittman-Robertson Hunter Access Grant highlights the importance of investing in public shooting facilities.

By working together, the City and Borough of Juneau and partner organizations have created a range that meets modern standards and serves the community well. This project shows how public resources can be used to enhance outdoor recreation and promote responsible firearm use.
